Prior to the Vongola Ring Battles each guardian is given their own tutor and Ryohei is given possibly the hardest of all, aside from Reborn himself, the Blue Arcobaleno, Colonello. Ryohei's enthusiasm and current weak state makes him a perfect student for Colonello, whose rigorous training (most likely picked up from Lal Mirch) makes most people give up.
Colonello claims Ryohei's problem isn't his lack of strength but merely his lack of ability to use it. Ryohei is constantly training his body, this makes it nearly impossible for his muscles and cells to be in top condition. Ryohei's cells work much like his muscles with a certain elasticity that makes him incredibly strong. Colonello is able to pass some of his spiritual strength to Ryohei, bonding them as master and student. Because of the techniques Colonello is able to pass on, Ryohei is able to blast through boulders.
It is implied that Ryohei stays close to Colonello over the years, and he wants to be the one to avenge Colonello's death during the fight against the Millefiore. He is unable to control his emotions and hatred towards those who killed his master and is forced to step back by Lal Mirch who tells him he'll lose the moment he steps into the ring because he can't control his emotions.
