outside and insideAs previously mentioned Basil is a member of the CEDEF or Consulenza Esterna Della Famiglia , which translates to Outside Advisors to the Family or something similar. This organization holds the position of advising the Vongola Family during times of crisis and helping to choose the next boss of the Vongola. Because of the close ties they are considered to be both part of the Vongola Family as well as a separate entity. The organization is shown as being small and only having a rough estimate of five members including Basil. Throughout the series the CEDEF plays an important role in backing up Tsuna and his guardians in their slightly unwilling quest to become the Ten Boss. The members include Basil, Lal Mirch, Oregano, and they’re led by Sawada Iemitsu, Tsuna’s father.
The reason why Basil’s inclusion in the CEDEF is important to his character is because it shows the strength he has. As a small organization they hold elite members such as Lal Mirch who was Colonello’s teacher and originally set to be the Blue Arcobaleno and Iemitsu who is descended from the first Vongola boss. Basil is charged with missions that protect the sacred traditions of the Vongola including carrying the half rings, although his were fakes, he was convincing enough to be someone who Iemitsu would entrust them with. Basil’s dying will flame can also attest to his strength and abilities as an outside advisor.
The most interesting thing about the group is the pattern of names. Oregano and Basil whose main connections and origins reside in the CEDEF are both named after herbs. The reasoning behind this is unknown and possibly is defined by a connection between them or the CEDEF.
