The Katekyo Hitman Reborn! fandom has it's favorites. Favorites who they are very particular about. Everyone has their own favorite guardian and the popularity of certain guardians outranks others. Yamamoto is really in the middle of this popularity contest. Among the Japanese fans, Tsuna tops all, he's the most popular, which makes sense since he is the protagonist. Then Gokudera and Hibari are up with him. That's the way it's been, Yamamoto is usually five or below, over there. Among the english fanbase Hibari and Gokudera are first with Mukuro and then Tsuna directly below them. After that comes Yamamoto then Lambo and Ryohei. In both fandom's though, Yamamoto is in the middle, always in the middle.
This is because of stereotypes, people always like the loners or bad boys, Hibari likes to be alone and stay separate from the rest and a lot of his fans love him for that (though not all of them, others have different reasoning) and Gokudera's the bad boy, he picks fights, and smokes more than a chimney stack. Most of his fans love him more for this than his loyalty or intelligence. I'm not saying that the fandom is silly to do this, just that like most fandoms they follow a pattern of the types they like and Yamamoto doesn't fit into those types.
Yamamoto is the nice guy, the friend, and the go to guy. He's loyal, like Gokudera, but has a happy and cheerful personality to boot. He can bring the others up when they're sad or feeling depressed and he's really, really loveable.
